Coorg or Kodagu

Harangi Dam

Today, three ethnic groups constitute the Himalayan population - Negroids, Mongoloids and Aryans.

The sanctuary was established in year 1955, covering an area of 953 sq km, holding the mountains like Swarg Rohini, Black Peak and Bandarpunch. Apart from the Sanctuary, the place is a favourite tourist destination, mainly because of the beauty of its snow-capped peaks and glaciers.

The sanctuary boasts of a wide variety of animal species that lives here includes Himalayan black bears, tahr, serow, monal, snow leopard, brown bears trogopan, chir, bharal, musk deer, koklas kaleej pheasants and chukor.

Nanda Devi National Park : This national park is spread over an area of 630 sq km, just close to the Nanda Devi peak. The Nanda Devi National Park was established in 1980. However, from 1950 onwards the increasing number of treks & climbing expeditions to the area has to some extent affected the virgin character of this place. This national park is distinct mix of flora and fauna. The fauna population comprises of - the brown and Himalayan black bears. Himalayan tahr, snow leopards, serow, and chir pheasants.

Kedarnath Sanctuary : Sprawling in an area of 967 sq km, Kedarnath Sanctuary in Garhwal was established in the year 1972. Garhwal Himalayas offer a spectacular view of snow-covered mountains, lush valleys and green forests. The Garhwal Himalayas also houses the Char Dhams, namely, Yamnotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Established in year 1966, the Rajaji National Park located on the edge of the Dehradunvalley covers an area of about 820 sq km. Reaching Garhwal
Rail : The nearest railhead is at Rishikesh, 170 kilometers from the Valley of Flowers.

Road : From Rishikesh, there is a good road up to Govindghat. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam runs conducted tours (duration: 7 days) by luxury coach to Hemkund and the Valley of Flowers.

Foot : From Govindghat, it is approximately a nine-hour trek to Ghangaria, where one usually halts for the night. From Ghangaria, it is five kilometers along glacial drifts and a gently ascending path, which levels out near the Valley of Flowers. It is a stiff climb to Hemkund, which is also five kilometers away from Ghangaria.

Reaching Goa

Moving Around in Goa
Kadamba State Corporation runs various public buses within Goa to enable smooth commutation within different tourist destinations in Goa. Journey through these buses may not be fastest but are most affordable as well as comfortable. The fare ranges between Rs. 4 for the first time and Rs.0.35 per subsequent kilometer. There are some shuttle buses as well (Rs.0.55/km) which ply round the clock on all major road routes within Goa.

The maximum temperature during summers is 19.80 degree centigrade while winters are cooler with a little variation in temperature. The minimum temperature recorded during winter season remains around 17.30 degree centigrade.

Guna Caves
With loose and wobbly rocks, these caves are also known as the Devil's kitchen for there is amusing variety of plants and small insects that are found here. These caves have a bat infested chamber which sets between three boulders which has a mention in a book as well. The scary sights of the cave are loved by teenagers who stand outside the cave and shout their names to hear their scaring echoes.

Kodai lake
The deserted roads of Kodai will take you to Kodaikanal. This 6km long lake is famous for walking strolls and bicycle tours. So you can trip around Kodai without harming the ecological balance by the fumes of Jeeps. The splendid flora with its flowering beauty lures the attention all. If lucky enough, you may spot a rare bird and have a view of birds romancing under the green woods that adorn Kodai.

Berijam Lake
A great spot for those who wish to live secluded, amidst refreshing as well as charming setting of mother nature. Only a few kilometers from Kodai, this calm and soothing lake is a reservoir of witching fauna. This star shaped lake is famous for its pure water. You may need to take permit from Forest Department 24hrs in advance.

Waterfalls
There are a few waterfalls that drench the hills at Kodai. When water rushes down from steep slopes and precipitous paths of Kodai, the whole aura looks magnificent. Silver Cascade is located 8km off Kodai and is a witching fall. Bear Shola Falls are other important falls here. These waterfalls are famous for bears which used to come here for water. The third major waterfall of Kodai are Thalaiyar falls. It is the widest waterfall here with a sheer drop from a height of 957ft. These splendid waterfalls are so magnificent that even a maundering trip can let you explore very interesting shrubs and small plants.

Boating
Boating in Kodaikanal can be an enthralling experience. You will have to rush as early as possible to beat the rush at the lake for boating. Horse-Riding
At most of the hill stations in India, riding on a horse's back is a favorite tourist activity. In 40 to 60 rupees, you can have a small trot arond the lake. If you are very keen, you can hire a horse for yourself and trot around Kodai for a perfect eco-tour. There are a number of bears as well which can scare your horse away. To avoid such a situation, we advise you follow the path that government has decided. There are few soft riding tracks at Kodai which will provide an unforgettable horse riding expedition.

Palani and Pollachi
Located about 62km from Kodaikanal,these are two small towns which are famous for their oranf\ge grooves and coffee plantations. These towns also house Malaikovil Subrahmanya temple which is a pligrimage destination for Hindus. There are about 659 steps that the devouts step up to reach this temple.

Annamali Park
Better known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, it is another green getaway from Kodaikanal. Sprawling over an area of 960km, the wildlife sanctuary is a home to animals like tiger, panther, sloth bear, the Nilgiri langur, lion-tailed macaque and wild boar. There are many varieties of bird and the reservoirs support a large population of crocodile. Though most of the park is closed to visitors you are allowed to trek around with a permit and a guide. It is even possible to stay in the forest rest house for a night.

Shopping at Kodaikanal
You may find residents of Kodai going to Madurai to shop for themselves but that does not eliminates Kodai from a shopping place. Pressure cookers, socks and buckets; that is what Kodai's residents buy from Madurai but we are sure that you will not be interested in any of these. Kodai has, rather, unique range of handicrafts and exquisite embroidery that is one of the finest in South India. Wide range of candles and heavily embroidered table cloths can be purchased from here. Kodia is a centre for home made chocolates as well. The cheese factory here exports great quantity of cheese to various countries across the globe. So if you are at Kodai, try buy some cheese for yourself.

Reaching Kodaikanal
By Air : Visitors can make a trip to Kodaikanal via Madurai Airport and Coimbatore Airport which are situated at a distance of 120km and 175km respectively. There are regular flights from all major metros of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore etc, which enroute Kodaikanal. There are taxis outside the airport along with private cabs which can be hired to reach Kodaikanal.

By Rail : There are a number of trains that you can take from all major metropolitan cities of India to reach Kodaikanal. From Chennai, you can take Nagarcoil Express or daily Pandain express while tourists from Delhi can board at Navyug Express that leads to Kodaikanal Road Station.

By Road : Private coaches and inter state buses run by government, make up and down trip to Kodaikanal. Buses from Kodaikanal Road Station can be hired for a nominal fee of Rs. 30/-. From station, it takes three and a half hour to reach Kodaikanal.

Moving Around in Kodaikanal
Most of the area in Kodaikanal can be covered on foot. There are horses, motorcycles and bicycles which are available on hire. Although Taxis are available but there are no auto-rickshaws. Kodai is such a bewitching place that cycling tours and rides on horses can be most enthralling way of moving around.

Ladakh
Ladakh in India is a very high altitude cold desert land with a low level of atmospheric oxygen. Occupying an area of some 90,000 sq. km at an altitudes of 2,750 to 6,670 m, Ladakh in northern India is situated between the Western Himalayas and Tibet and holding the enchanting Hemis National Park. The pristine beauty and the varieties of activities like trekking, white-water rafting, camel and wildlife safaris and sightseeing attracts thousands of people to this region. Besides the scenic mountain landscape, Ladakh is also home to a variety of cultural resources like - local homes and ancient monasteries. Ladakh also supports a high-altitude ecosystem of uncommon and endangered flora and fauna.

Leh, the capital of Ladakh, is dominated by the picturesque palace of the former Ladakhi royal family, together with the Victory Fort, built to commemorate an important 16th century Ladakhi victory over neighbouring kingdoms.

The Ladakh Region
The Nubra Valley, known as a flowering den in the Ladakh region gets covered in endless bushes of yellow and pink wild roses. Once the valley is through with the season of roses around August, a layer of wild lavender spreads gently on it. Nubra is comparatively a warmer valley in Ladakh making it perfect for crops and fruits to grow.

The Diskit Village is located near Khalsar. With apricot plantations all over, the valley is one of the larger village of the Nubra valley. The road between Diskit and the quaint little Hunder Village winds through a gorgeous stretch of sand dunes. Ladakh Wildlife Resource
Located at the union of three zoogeographic realms, Palearctic, Oriental and Malayan, Ladakh's ecosystem is possibly the most unique and by far the most mind-boggling in the world. With its barren plateaus and uplands, Ladakh boasts a distinct alpine, floral and faunal variety. Ladakh houses several flowering plants, a dozen of most rare mammals and over a hundred species of birds in its rugged terrain. Most of the species are classified as endangered or rare.

Ladakh Fauna
The wild yak is to be found only here. The snow leopard is Ladakh's most rare animal. Another one that is unique is the kyang or the wild horse, while at lower altitudes the musk deer too is a rare sight, precious by virtue of its expensive musk. Visitors are likely to spot many marmots, mouse hares, stone martens, red foxes, wolves, ibex, bharal and shapu during the course of their journey but the habitat of the nyan (big horned sheep), chim (Tibetan antelope famed for its fleece-Shahtoosh), goa (Tibetan gazelle), lynx, pallas cat, kyamg (wild horse) and brong dong (wild yak) are still outside the tourists' sphere.

Ladakh Avian Fauna
The avid bird watcher can spend friutful hours by observing Bactrian magpies, grey tits, chough, raven, sparrow, kite, kestrel, Turkoman rock pigeon, chukor, finches, buntings, larks, desert wheateaters, a many more varieties of birds.

To protect & conserve its ecosystem, Ladakh has declared some reserved areas for it ecological sphere. Hemis National Park is one of them.

Hemis National Park 
Hemis National Park is a high altitude protected area created in year 1981 in the eastern part of the cold desert of Ladakh for the conservation and protection of its unique flora and fauna. It covers an area of 600 sq km in the Markha and Rumbak valleys.

Dry forests of juniper, birch and fir are found in the park area. Also present are the alpine grasslands and scrublands. Various rare and endangered animal species found in the cold desert area are also housed in the Hemis National Park. Amongst these are the snow leopard, Tibetan wild or kiang, ibex, serow and Tibetan antelope. Amongst the avi fauna population found in the hemis national park are the snow, snow partridge and golden oriole.

Trekking in LadakhLadakh Topography

Trekking in Ladakh
When Ladakh was first thrown open to tourism an average itinerary encompassed visits to Leh and its environs with some treks into nearby valleys. The most popular of these were the 8-day Markha valley trek, the 11-day Lamayuru-Padum route and the Stok Khangri round trek. Now with growing interest in adventure tourism the focus has shifted to the mysterious valleys of Suru and Zanskar with their spectacular scenery.

Air : Indian Airlines operates scheduled services from Srinagar to Leh & Jammu/Leh. Leh airport is 8 km from city center. Jet Airways also operates services between Jammu, Delhi and Srinagar (Sundays only).

Rail : The nearest Rail Head is Jammu 620 km. from Leh. Jammu is connected to all parts of India through express trains.

Road : Leh is approachable on State highway from Srinagar crossing high passes, the highest being Fotu-la(13,479 feet). Road communication between Srinagar and Leh is closed between October & May. For local sight seeing taxis and luxury coaches are available.
